The 5-days primate trekking safari will give you a chance to have close encounters with some of the rare primates in the world. You will engage in gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, and chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park and you will be able to go for a canopy walk. This safari has a lot to offer where you will explore Rwanda from the south to the North as you enjoy the country’s fascinating landscape with overlapping hills, lush green forests, lakes and rivers.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Pick up and transfer to Nyungwe National Park
On the first day of your 5 days primates trekking safari, a guide/driver will pick you up from the airport or hotel. You will set off for Nyungwe National Park which is located in the southwestern part of Rwanda. It takes about 5 hours to get to the park from Kigali however, you will have a stopover in Butare town where you will visit a museum. You will later proceed to the park and upon arrival you will head to your lodge where you will have dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking and canopy walk at Nyungwe National Park
After having breakfast, you will be taken to the park’s headquarters. Upon arrival, you will be given guidelines to follow and assigned a guide to lead the activity. You will then move deep into the forest searching for the chimpanzees. It might take 2 to 6 hours to locate the chimps, after locating them you will spend one hour in their presence. You will have a chance to see other primates, birds, butterflies, and insects while tracking the chimps. After tracking chimps, you will go back to the lodge for lunch and rest.
After having lunch, you will go for the canopy walk which allows you to have an aerial view of the park. It is an adventurous activity to do especially for travelers who do not have a phobia for heights. After the walk, you will be transferred back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
After having breakfast, you will check out of the lodge and meet with your guide/driver. You will embark on the journey to Volcanoes National Park, you will have a stopover at Lake Kivu. There are amazing features to see on the journey like rolling hills, farms, and locals. Upon arrival, you will go to the lodge where you will refresh and rest. Later in the afternoon, you will visit Lake Ruhondo and Burera which are twin lakes, you may go on a boat cruise and be able to see some birds. You will later return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking and Cultural Encounter
On the fourth day of your safari, you will have an early breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters. Upon arrival, you will start with a briefing about the guidelines to follow and what to expect. You will be assigned a gorilla family to trekk based on your age and level of fitness. With the help of the park’s guide or ranger, you will start trekking looking for gorillas, once you locate them you will be allowed to spend exactly one hour in their presence.
You will be able to watch them feed, play and learn something about their social lives. After trekking, return to the park headquarters where you will meet your safari guide who will transfer you back to the lodge. Refresh and rest, you will later visit the gorilla guardian village for a cultural encounter. You will be able to enjoy traditional dances, learn about the Rwandan culture and heritage. You will later transfer back to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Return to Kigali and departure
On the last day of your safari, you will wake up and have breakfast. Your guide / driver will transfer you back to the airport or a hotel in Kigali depending on your schedule. That will be the end of the 5 days primates trekking Safari.
