Boat cruising in Murchison Falls National Park

Boat cruising in Murchison Falls National Park is done along the Nile River and is an incredible experience. This park is located in Uganda and is known for its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and of course, the powerful Murchison Falls. During a boat cruise travelers have the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species.

The boat journey takes you along the Nile River, offering picturesque views of the surrounding wilderness and the chance to see animals coming to drink and cool off by the water’s edge. One of the highlights of the cruise is getting up close to the base of Murchison Falls, where the Nile River squeezes through a narrow 7-meter gorge before plunging over a 40-meter-high cliff.

Albert Delta

This cruise typically takes visitors along the Nile River Delta, where the river joins Lake Albert. It’s an excellent opportunity to spot a wide variety of bird species, including the elusive Shoebill Stork, as well as other wildlife such as hippos, crocodiles, and maybe even elephants coming to the water’s edge. The perfect time to enjoy this cruise is the afternoon when the dusk descends. The trip takes 3 to 4 hours which is enough time to enjoy the cool breeze and take beautiful stunning photos.

Launch trip

This is perhaps the most popular boat cruise in the park. It takes visitors upstream from Paraa to the base of Murchison Falls. Along the way, you can expect to see large concentrations of hippos, crocodiles, and various water birds. The highlight is, of course, the breathtaking view of Murchison Falls from the water, offering a unique perspective on this natural wonder. Travelers get to witness the power of the falls as they surge through a narrow 7-meter gorge.

Sunset / Sundowns boat cruises

Some operators like Wild Frontiers offer sunset cruises on the Nile River. This provides a peaceful and scenic experience as you watch the sun dip below the horizon while cruising along the water. It’s a great way to unwind and enjoy the beauty of the park in the golden light of the evening.

The best time to go  

The best time to go for a boat cruise in Murchison Falls National Park is during the dry season. It is easier to spot animals as they gather around water sources, including the Nile River where the boat cruises take place. Additionally, the weather is usually dry and sunny, enhancing visibility and overall comfort during the cruise. The period from June to August and December to February is the best time since it is when the dry season occurs.

The cost of a boat cruise in Murchison Falls National Park

The Uganda Wildlife Authority sets up standard prices for boat cruise rides which are USD 30 per person for Foreign nonresidents, USD 25 for foreign residents, and Ugx 30,000 for East African citizens.
