Munyanga River hiking trail in Bwindi

The birds that can be seen on this trail include sunbirds, hornbills, kingfishers, and many more. This trail is suitable for all levels of fitness and can be enjoyed at leisure.

Waterfall trail

Starting from Buhoma, this moderate trail leads to a beautiful waterfall deep within the forest. Along the way, tourists traverse through lush vegetation, cross streams, and have chances to spot various bird species and possibly some primates.

Rushura Hill trail

This trail offers panoramic views of the park and surrounding areas. It’s a bit more challenging due to its steep inclines, but the vistas from the top are well worth the effort. On clear days, you can see as far as the Virunga Volcanoes in neighboring Rwanda. Rushura hill trail meanders through diverse vegetation including thickets of bamboo, ferns and ancient tropical trees. It requires travelers to be physically fit before engaging in taking this trail. Remember to carry a camera to capture the beautiful scenery and moments.

Muzabajiro Loop Trail

Muzabajiro loop trail is located near Ruhija, this trail takes you through diverse habitats, including bamboo forests and open clearings. It showcases the park’s rich plant life, abundant wildlife, and natural beauty. It’s a great option for birdwatching, with the chance to spot species like sunbirds, turacos, the African Green Broadbill, and the Handsome Francolin among others. Some primates like L’hoest monkeys, and black and white monkeys can be seen on this trail.

The Ivy River trail

This trail, also near Ruhija, follows the Ivy River and passes through both primary and secondary forests. It’s known for its birdlife, including the African Wood Owl and various species of sunbirds. The Ivy river trail takes you through the heart of Bwindi forest where trees create a canopy overhead, filtering the sunlight and casting fading shadows beneath.

Buhoma – Nkuringo trail

This is a longer, more challenging trail that connects the Buhoma sector with the Nkuringo sector of the park. It offers a great adventure for experienced hikers, taking them through rugged terrain, dense thickets, and rocky slopes. It typically takes multiple days to complete and offers a truly immersive wilderness experience, passing through different forest types and offering opportunities for wildlife encounters along the way. The Buhoma – Nkuringo trail requires great stamina and a level of fitness however, travelers who take this trail are rewarded with beautiful views of Virunga volcanoes at a distance. Additionally, this trail allows tourists to have a cultural encounter with the Batwa (pygmies) who live near the forest.

 Nature walks in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park cost 30 USD per person for foreign nonresidents, USD 15 for foreign residents, and UGX 10,000 for East African citizens. These fees are exclusive of park entry fees.

The best time to visit Bwindi Park for nature walks

 Nature walks and hiking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can be done any time of the year however, the best time is during the dry season which starts from June to September and from December to February. During these months there is little or no rainfall making it easier to navigate the trails.
